The Problem with The Nokia Video

Listen, I know it's Drake and he made Hotline Bling and God's Plan... but really, I mean seriously... When the fuck did we start caring about videos. Like genuinely I remember the God's Plan video was a big thing because it was the biggest song ever and he did that donation but here we are at Nokia... and we are going absolutely crazy because Drake dropped the damn Nokia video. Let me preface this with I hate the damn song but its catchy and bearable enough for me to listen too. Anyway why the fuck are we talking about this video like it's Michael Jackson's Thriller.

Okay so the damn elephant in the room is Kendrick Lamar's role in this. So let me pause and come up with a line that will cause drama..."Is Drake's Nokia video copying from Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl performance?" Do I think so... fuck yeah this is the pettiest man alive. So... You're telling me that Drake decided to make a video for his hit song and have dancers, and it's in Black and white. Drizzy NOOOOOO. You crossed the line with that one.
Okay, I'm a be serious now, but there are some similarities between Kendrick's recent performances and Drake's Nokia video. But I think is more of a testament to bad creative decisions rather than copying from another artist. Let's talk about both, though. On one hand, he copied Kendrick and chose to make the video with all the dancers and choreography everywhere, yes, the black and white, the handshakes, and the owls at the end. But truthfully what does any of that mean like okay hes fucking video responding to Kendrick. This is the way I think about it. Imagine you're Kendrick, the video comes out. Like, put the funny Kendrick voice on and imagine what he says in his reaction. It probably sounds like this "Oh shit look at this guy." Like it's nothing, literally nothing.
Now imagine a world where the Nokia video wasn't a Superbowl choreography, but it was a fucking house party vibes are they was at the club turning up. Because that's was the song is the song is Friday or Saturday night I'm going out, and there's gonna be Patron and fine women around me. What it isn't is me standing in a crowd of people dancing like I'm Beyoncé.
Now, one thing I appreciate is that Drake learned a little two-step for the video. In the midst of him standing around looking lost puppy, he, you know, moved his feet and moved around. Like, usually, have you seen Drake perform it's just him standing there telling the crowd to sing. That being said, this video means nothing absolutely nothing. It's just a video for his hit record, and we should treat it that way. Until we get to the very end. Where a frame of a bunch of owls comes up on screen, paralleling the Not Like Us video. Now...for now, this means nothing, but in the long term, are we looking at round 2...
